Šilo is a relatively small picturesque village with around 400 inhabitants, situated on the north-eastern side of the Krk Island, in a peaceful Stipanja bay, naturally sheltered by a horn- Punta Šila.
Being situated only 20 km from the Krk Bridge, Šilo is overlooking the CrikvenicaRiviera situated 2,5 miles across the Vinodolski Channel (commonly referred to as the Quiet channel), the place where the first ferry on the Adriatic coast started its journey. Even though some ancient remains have been found in the surroundings of the village, Silo has a relatively recent history and dates from the mid-nineteenth century. It was firstmentioned in1898. It was established asa fishing village, thena marine center, and nowadays it became thetourist centerof the Dobrinj municipality. Thanks to the strongerconnections withRijeka and the Kvarnerareawith theinterior, thanks to the touristdevelopmentof CrikvenicaandOpatija,during the two world wars, tourism started to develop in Šilo as well. However, the actual,historicstart ofthe tourism in Šilo was marked by theinitiative ofReverendJosipPavicicwho,in 1928, with a group of like-minded peoplefounded the "Registered collective inlimited warranty-Marineandclimaticbeachin Šilo”.
Nowadays the tourist potential of Šilo is based on the private accommodation in rooms, apartments, family houses and camping site. No hotel accommodation is provided, thus the place is considered the best solution for a peaceful vacation without any crowds.
The best advantages of Šilo are its numerous natural, sun-bathed beaches, especially the famous, children-friendly sandy beach with the Blue flag, an international proof of a beach quality and best water quality. Crystal clear blue sea, long promenade and beaches give special charm to this natural oasis. For people who like to spend their vacation with their pets, and would like to take them to the beach, Šilo is an excellent choice since it has a special beach that allows them to bring their favorite pets. The divers will also find their piece of paradise here since the underwater world of Šilo and its surrounding watersabounds in very attractive diving sites. The most interesting one is the wrecked ship “Peltastis” hidden in the nearby waters.
Few restaurants situated in the center of the village all serve homemade, autochthonous food, meat, fish and sea fruits, as well as the international cuisine. Don’t miss to try some of the local wine sorts.
When you come to Šilo, you’ll find anything you might need…there are few grocery shops, a florist, friseur, Tourist board office, post office, medical center, pharmacy, ATM and exchange office.
Thanks to Šilo’s fishing history, during the summer, the visitors can enjoy in the traditional “fisherman’s evenings in Šilo, tasting the autochthonous food and drinks, and amuse themselves by participating in the sports and entertaining program.
The multifunctional playground, tennis courts, beach volley, hiking and walking, as well as biking trails, are all only a part of Šilo’s offer of sports and recreational activities.
During the summer, one can book a boat excursion and enjoy the views from the sea. Boat connections between Šilo and Crikvenica are active all year round.
